Some people value their bank account and are willing to do whatever it takes to grow it. Some people value their career and are willing to do whatever it takes to advance in their career. Some people value their status in society or how people perceive them. As you can see, our priorities can be all over the place. Priorities are critical because they shape every aspect of our lives. As people of faith, God has to be our number one priority. Here are three reasons why having the proper priorities are important:

1. Priorities keep you focused
When God becomes your priority, it keeps you aligned with His will for your life. This is what Paul means when he says in Philippians 3:14, "I press on towards the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus". Christ was Paul’s priority, which kept him focused on the prize.
2. Priorities keep you from giving up
When you want to give up, having priorities help you stay the course. This is what Paul meant when he says in 2 Timothy 4:7 "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith". Paul’s faith in God kept him from giving up when he wanted to give up.
3. Priorities gives your life meaning
When you have priorities, you feel as if you are making a meaningful contribution to the kingdom of God and society as whole. Priorities become the fuel you need to reach spiritual maturity.
Priorities are simply things that you value. We should all take a hard look at our lives to ensure we are spending our time in the areas we say are important to us. The Bible says in Exodus 20:3 "you shall have no other Gods before me". God is saying, "I have to be the number one priority in your life". Priorities are like a compass. They will either lead you towards your godly destination or distract you from what God desires for your life. We all have to be careful to keep our priorities in order. As always, stay rooted in God!
